Jury Duty Portal

LA Court / Desktop Website

Designing a flow to walk LA residents through the jury duty process

Overview

The LA Court system is responsible for administering justice in LA County. It's one of the largest court systems in the United States and handles a wide range of cases, including: civil, criminal, traffic, and family law. It enforces the law and works to resolve disputes in a fair and impartial manner. To do this, it needs jurors to help decide the outcome of each case.

Currently, it doesn't consistently have a large enough pool of jurors. The court sends out post cards summoning residents to fill out their current information online and check if they are eligible for jury duty. If they are eligible, they are asked to show up at the court for jury selection. If they are selected as a juror, they are expected to show up for the court case and follow through until the end to fulfill their duties as jurors. Right now, this process has a low completion rate. Many residents summoned for jury duty either don't start the process or don't follow through to the end.

In this project, I performed a user-centered redesign of the jury duty portal website, optimizing for improved completion rate. I overhauled the information architecture and copywriting. I partnered with developers to choose and implement a new design framework. I also improved the site's accessibility and ADA compliance by changing layout, type, icons, and colors to meet guidelines.
